The morning air was still cool and pleasant, and as we meandered through the winding cobblestone streets of our quaint village, I turned to Lukas.
"Should we sing a song? Which song should we sing? Oh, what's that song you sing at school?"
"Lang zal hij leven!"
"Ok, let's sing that one then!"
In unison, we belted out the verses of the Dutch song, breaking the morning silence,
"Lang zal hij leven,
Lang zal hij leven,
Lang zal hij leven in de gloria,
In de gloria, in de gloria!
Hieperderpiep, hoera!
Hieperderpiep, hoera!
Hieperderpiep, hoera!"
Two foreigners, walking through this traditional Zeeuwse village, singing a very traditional song. Now that's funny.
Less funny was the scene at the strawberry farmer's house, as our dog marched through the farmer's front door, eating the food from his cat's bowl. Damn dog. I can just picture the farmers sitting at his breakfast table, paper in hand, glancing up to see a strange dog saunter in and make himself at home.
Funny foreigners. Or not so funny. I guess it all depends on how you look at it.
Fresh strawberries, cherries, raspberries, and dog leash in hand, we began our slow treck back to the house, enjoying the Zeeuwse sunshine, the butterflies, and all of the charming little brick homes along the way. Mornings like this that I will always remember. It's all about taking time to taste the cool, fresh berries.
